Don’t forget that if you have a public Twitter account then anyone can read the tweets that you post. The only way to have a private conversation with one other person is to use the direct message (DM) function in Twitter. You can only send direct messages to someone if they are also following you. There must be a mutual relationship. Learn more about to send and reply to a DM using the online Twitter interface.
All of the conversation doesn’t happen in the room where the presentation is taking place. Twitter and other social media tools provide a way for you to share information about what you learn and thoughts about the topic to a wider, global audience. Find out more about backchannel communication from this EDUCAUSE information sheet.
Live-tweeting conferences and meetings is a great way to share information that you learn or that is being discussed with a wider audience. Think of the number of people you can reach through Twitter, many of them may not be able to attend a meeting or conference but can now share in the information you are tweeting.
When live-tweeting events it is best to always include the hashtag of the event you are attending as this will help keep your tweets organized and help these tweets appear in any search streams that are picking up this hashtag.
Feel like you have a handle on Twitter? Ready to get Tweeting?
As part of the requirements for this tutorial you will need to post at least three times to Twitter using the #mlanet12 hashtag. We would like two posts to be original and related to your plans for MLA and at least one tweet to utilize replying to someone’s tweet or retweeting something of interest.
Tweets might focus on the following:
What you are most looking forward to at MLA this year?
What sessions are you excited to attend?
Which speaker do you want to hear?
Will you be attending any meetings? If so which ones and why?
Are you looking forward to seeing your medical librarian colleagues?
What do you want to do in Seattle?
Emily, Beth and Max will be on the lookout for your tweets.
Please be sure to complete your tweets by April 22, 2012 if you want to be included on the drink ticket list.
